Odds and Ends

Most house and apartment rentals in Iowa City and Coralville run on August-to-August leases, and landlords generally ask tenants for commitments for the following school year by April. So if you’re planning to move here it’s a good idea to try to find something in April or May; if you wait until later to start looking you may have a hard time finding anything, especially close to campus. Some history students rent houses or apartments together and may have roommates going off to do research, so for your first semester or year you might be able to find a place by contacting current students.

You can get your UI identification/library card as soon as you’ve sent in your acceptance to Iowa; you don’t have to wait until the semester starts or even until after the summer to check out books or use Interlibrary Loan. Just go to the basement of Calvin Hall.

You can also obtain your UI e-mail account once you’ve accepted. Access the UI Website, www.uiowa.edu and click on Current Students, then ISIS/My Iowa. Enter your social security number and your temporary password, which is your birthdate expressed in six digits (e.g., September 12, 1975 = 091275). Click on Accounts/Passwords at the top of the screen, then on Request E-mail Account at the bottom of the page. Once you’ve activated your account, you can also change your password.

Tuition scholarships are pretty easily available for intensive summer foreign language classes here on the Iowa campus. Some new students who need additional languages for their research take these courses the summer before their first semester in the department.
